I ran 14 miles
then I came back
to wish you goodnight
but you were already asleep
and they'd dimmed the lights
so I waited
'cause I was hoping
that you'd wake back up before visiting was over
and I could say hello
and you'd sleep a bit more sound knowing you hadn't been alone
but you tossed and you turned till the time was gone
then I left and I cried for the entire walk home

I came back
at lunchtime the next day
and asked what it was you'd ordered
that you were pushing 'round your plate
you said you didn't really have much appetite
but you let me read the menu and suggest things you might like
and I guess it didn't matter
'cause you weren't gonna eat
but if we didn't plan for wanting we'd be accepting what that means

we picked a stupid combination
garlic naan and shepherd's pie
then I got a trifle out my bag and you ate it with delight
and I know now that you were dying
but then I took it as a sign
the way you looked at me and smiled with a soft contented sigh

and maybe if I'd known we were running out of time
I'd never have done that 14 miles and I'd have made it back that night
but it probably doesn't help
to think about that now
or all the other times and other ways I let you down
